Freshly baked and sold each day from a traditional, secret clean recipe at The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop – the top place to visit in the heart of the English Lake District. Alternatively visit our delightful second shop inside Hawkshead’s historic Grade II Listed ‘Corner Shop’ building on Main Street. With its original slate floors, quaint period windows and wonky walls, the shop exudes the atmosphere of bygone days.
What to Expect
Expect to queue, this is a popular spot, but it’s well worth the wait. The gingerbread itself is utterly distinctive, crumbly and spiced, unlike anything else you’ll find. The shop also sells rum butter and preserves.
The History
Grasmere Gingerbread® was invented in 1854 by Victorian creator cook Sarah Nelson who mixed and baked her spicy-sweet chewy concoction inside her neat Church Cottage home – now The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop – and sold it to villagers and visitors from a tabletop on a tree stump outside her front door.
Getting There & Essential Info
The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop is at Church Cottage, Grasmere (LA22 9SW). Open 9.15am to 5.15pm daily.
The shop in Hawkshead is open everyday 10am – 5pm (10am – 4.30pm in winter, please all plan ahead before making a special trip).
